Our next Graze Wine Club tasting will be held on Friday 1 November 2024 when we’ll be collaborating with Preston’s Liquor and the amazing Boplaas Winery and Distillery from Calitzdorp. Boplaas is a sixth generation family owned wine Estate dating back to 1880 when the Nel family bought the farm in Calitzdorp to produce brandy for export to England. From the 1920’s the KWV took over wine making and distilling leaving the Boplaas potstills dormant for nearly 70 years. In the 1970’s Danie Nel plants Tinto Barocca vines thinking they were shiraz vines, this “mistake” becomes a stroke of genius as the terroir of the Calitzdorp region is ideally suited to the Portuguese varieties of grape. In 1989 the legislation for distilling changes and Boplaas receives the first private distilling licence to resume making its famous potstill brandy and in 2018 they win the Best SA Whisky award at the Michelangelo awards for their single grain 6yr old Whisky.
